Scaffolding

A. Why do we need to develop self-directed learners?

Individuals have their own way of understanding or what we call learning styles. According to Time4learning, 2017 student will most likely not possess one style exclusively but you may be able to see patterns in their learning preferences. For example, a student who is visual may also be a very social and verbal learner and prefers to learn especially difficult topics using their primary skills. . We need to develop self-directed learners because individual should take the initiative and the responsibility for what occurs. Individuals select, manage, and assess their own learning activities, which can be pursued at any time, in any place, through any means, at any age.We are responsible for making the choices that help create our own paths, certainly once we become of age. Self-directed learning greatly increases a person’s ability to make sound, intelligent, self-affirming choices when the stakes are high. The more practice people have with making their own decisions–with reading their own ideas, feelings, wants, and needs and weighing them against available options–when they are young, the more likely they are to grow into mature, sensible, healthy, productive and compassionate adults. We need provide opportunities to pursue a far wider range of interests than is possible in a typical school with its predefined curriculum, fixed schedule, and inability to accommodate the needs and interests of individuals.

Even those topics that are within the usual school curriculum can be explored in greater depth, and more meaningfully, in self-directed learning—such as by actually building and sailing a boat rather than merely reading about how others have done so, or by surveying a plot of ground rather than simply calculating the area of a polygon presented on a worksheet. And if the boat sinks, one can repair it and learn from the mistake, instead of having it marked wrong and moving on to the next “project.” When the boat floats, there can be time to take it for a sail—even a long one, perhaps one that results in the exploration of an entirely new set of interests. Whatever restrictions there may be, they are not the result of some predetermined curriculum.

B. As future teachers, how will you help your students become self-directed learners?

The ability of a student to become a self-directed learner relies on the development of their meta-cognitive skills, or the ability to reflect and assess their own learning and thinking. Ambrose et al. 2010 states “to become self-directed learners, students must learn to assess the demands of the task, evaluate their own knowledge and skills, plan their approach, monitor their progress, and adjust their strategies as needed” and that this process is cyclical and dependent on the student’s beliefs about intelligence and learning. Some students may develop these skills on their own but many will benefit from guided (but not forced) instruction geared towards developing these meta-cognitive skills. Specifically, Ambrose et al. suggests a number of techniques in the classroom for developing each of the steps within the cyclical meta-cognitive process. Understanding how your student learns is perhaps one of the most important tasks a parent can undergo while homeschooling. Another is learning how to provide opportunities for learning through the use of these identified learning preferences. Cultivate an academic environment in your classroom by setting high, but not impossible, expectations for your students. Push students to achieve higher standards and they will eventually get there -- and along the way, offer lots of praise. Some may take more time than others, but all students want to be told, "You're smart and you're doing a good job." Give high school students college material to read and tell them, "This story/book/math concept is taught in first-year colleges around the country." Once the students tackle and master the material, tell them, "Good job students -- I knew you could do it."

B. What student-support materials will you provide your students to help them become self-directed?

The student-support material that I will provide to help my students become self-directed is scaffolding. It is a tool that provides the support and structure necessary for students to become independent, self-regulated learners. For example, I will let my students do the web-quest or the treasure hunt that i will provide for them to explore their self more.

WEb 2.0 tools

A. Which tools do you find useful or appropriate for your subject area?

In my subject area in Industrial Education Technology Google Apps for Education will be a very helpful tools. As of this present era students are very much exposed to technology so it is very practical way if we make use of these tools in presenting and elaborating our lessons  just like in giving instructions to my students i can use either gmail, hangouts or group for communication apps. For further instructions and clarifications for the tasks or activities that i will give i think YouTube can be useful too. For group activities i might need to use the Google docs to have them participate in doing their activities by collaborating with their group mates.

B. How will you incorporate these tools in your unit plan?

These tools are very useful nowadays because students rely on these technologies that are present. In teaching the students these technologies are much more likely available for the students to participate with and it would be accessible in the school and also outside the school.

Students may have opportunities to choose their content focus based on interests. As a student in this University I'm a fortunate one because in most years that I've observe, and reflect upon lessons plans I finally meet the right thing to do it in order to be an effective and outstanding teacher to my students. For me, being involved to the education of my students or may I said that to be as their facilitator I want to impart learning by expressing their selves and want to make my students to be creative and innovative in any field.

ISTE standards

A. What are the ISTE standards that you possess? Please cite specific personal experiences wherein you portray such standards?

Based on my experience there are some ISTE standards that i possess. One is being an empowered learner according to ISTE, students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences. As a student i have often use some gadgets in doing my activities, assignments and tasks in school. Such technologies like cellular phones, computers and laptops makes my studying more easy and its way more better convenience to look for any information that i need. In using this kind of stuffs it well make your work more comprehensive and achievable at any given period of time because its way more faster than finding info about a certain topic in a library. Back when i was in my second year in college i was assigned to do a report on our subject in Electricity my instructor instructed me to do it in my own way in any means possible as long as it can be easily done and the resources are convenient and accessible. I was given a one day to prepare everything, thank God we already have these awesome technologies like laptops and the LCD projectors available in our department. So what i did was i make a power point presentation and used a projector in presenting my report and it was so convenient and so easily done, i even have a video presentation about some of the power tools being used in electricity that aren't available in our school but still a very important knowledge to be learned as a BSTTE- IT student.

Basically speaking this technologies drives the students to do more and think more. For me as i have learned about how to use different applications in my cellular phone which enables me to participate in this systematic digital world we live in, it is indeed a very big help to relate every learning i have accumulated in different medias.

B. As a future teacher, in what ways can you develop these standards among your students?

Students nowadays are far way more dependent to technologies that we have than what i have experienced being a student myself. As a future teacher i need to equipped myself with those up-skilled knowledge in this evolution of technologies. I need to empower myself more and learn more as i journey through this vocation i choose. This calling is indeed needs to prepared in order to achieve those goals in teaching, nurturing and molding those brilliant minds of the students to be more creative and active in participating in their lives experiences. As a future teacher i will set up goals for my teaching career that will help them grow and achieve their goals in life through the use of the developed knowledge of ISTE standards for teachers that i should possess in order to facilitate learning effectively for my students. Through the use of digital tools, i can facilitate and inspire learners creativity by letting them explore real world. As a teacher I can also design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments that will help my students have a room for knowledge construction through the use of digital tools or innovate using a variety of technology, identify and solve problems or create solution through the learning experiences and assessments that I have provided. Like assessing them through online quizzes or asking them to make their own blog. As a teacher to develop these standards to my students I must be a role model when it comes to digital age work and learning. I must be good in handling technology systems in order to teach my students and collaborate with my students using digital tools.

As a future teacher to have access to any information possible by the use of the technologies that we have today and in the future. In order to develop that skills mentioned above, I have to make use of all the possible resources available. To make the learning of my students easier and effective, as a future teacher, i should equip myself with the right technological advances, ideas, knowledge that can be acquired in anyway possible way like attending seminars and conventions learning for teachers. Engaging in different learning activities available for teachers will make me more knowledgeable on the field you will be handling.

 b. As a future teacher, how will you develop the 21st century skills among your students?

There are many researches and studies conducted as to how individuals learn  to develop the skills and knowledge they need for civic and economic success in the 21st century. According to Dr. V. Darleen Opfer  in her research about teachers and teaching, there are lessons on how to teach 21st century skills and knowledge. lessons on how to teach 21st century skills

Based on what I have observed, Students tend to understand the ideas you are relaying to them if they can see it and experience it in real life. As much as possible you have to relate each lesson to the real world they live in. To understand the the different perspectives, students need to comprehend the relationship between factors that will affect learning development there and how to apply this understanding into different areas in life. Generally speaking, the 21st century skills concept is motivated by the belief that teaching students the most relevant, useful, in-demand, and universally applicable skills should be prioritized in today's schools,
